Anyone Out There?
*Photo by Antonia Solivellas (2017) - Sunday, February 26th. Alex, Sarah, Francesc and Antonia participated in the X Marxa del Montserratí in Esparreguera, Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), as part of the team's training for the Oxfam Trailwalker in April. The Marxa is a half-marathon (21 k.m.) trailwalk/run through the Esparreguera and Collbató area of Montserrat Mountain.
Meet the team
Will is 41 yrs. old, originally from New Zealand and now living in Barcelona for the past 7 yrs. The Oxfam walk is both a personal challenge and a chance to contribute to a great cause. He enjoys running and hiking but, like most people, this is the longest trail he has ever taken on, "After 50 kms. it's going to be all psychological. I'll be relying on some Zen breathing techniques, my hard-core happy teammates and the sweet thought of crossing the finish line!"
Alex is a California native living in Barcelona. An avid runner, she’s participated in several 5 km and 10 km races but never in anything like this, saying, “It’s 100 km in 32 hrs. or less! It’s both scary and exciting, but knowing that proceeds will help an organization like Oxfam to help those in need makes rising to the challenge totally worth it.”
Alice is a 35 yr. old New Yorker. Having recently changed her lifestyle to being more active, she's found a different kind of appreciation for travel that includes hikes, half-marathons, and nature. She's excited for this opportunity that comes with a destination adventure, a reunion of friends from afar, beautiful scenery, and most importantly, CHARITY!
Antonia is 37 yrs. old and from Mallorca. When she heard about Oxfam’s initiative she didn’t hesitate to sign up because it’s both a challenge and a way to help a good cause. She didn’t know every team member but it didn’t matter, “We all have the same goal and we’ll make it. We’re lucky to get water every time we want it, these kids aren’t, and our miles will bring it closer to them. Every contribution helps and we’re looking forward to your collaboration as well!”
Sarah is 32 yrs. old, originally from the UK and now living in Palma. Sarah enjoys volunteering and is always looking for opportunities to help others. It's this same interest that inspired her to participate in this event.
Tom is a Project Manager in London, and has lived in three different countries in the last 27 years. He loves water sports and his years living in Palma, Mallorca, helped fuel that interest. For Tom, the Trailwalker is an opportunity to help those living in poverty, as well as a chance to put your mind and body to the test, “I'd like to contribute to this cause and support my teammates in doing so.”
Together we’re Anyone out there?
We’re taking it in good stride, with lots of positivity and a high dose of humor. How can one expect to complete a feat such as this, if not? We may be dragging our weary bodies across that finish line, but we won’t turn back and we won’t quit. We may be the only ones walking at night, calling into the darkness, “Anyone out there?”. But, when that darkness starts creeping into our minds and we begin to feel like we can’t physically go on, we’ll know that we can count on each other to answer, to push, to pull, to motivate.
Please help us reach our goal by donating today. By doing so, you’ll not only be helping us cross the finish line but you’ll also be helping others gain access to potable drinking water, as well as funding several other initiatives to help those in need.
Thank you for your support. See you at the finish line.
